The mouth of a converter is cooled using a cooling medium which is supplied to a header zone from a storage zone via a heat exchanger. The cooling medium is admitted to conduits forming a serpentine pipe embedded in refractory material lining the mouth. The used medium is passed to a further header zone for return to the storage zone for recooling and recycling. The header tanks allow for surges in the cooling system and impose a certain pressure on the cooling medium. The conduits are arranged between fins welded onto the lining so that they are free to expand and contract with temp. variations of the lining.
