Catalyst and process for the production of ammonia

A catalyst is prepared by subliming a carbonyl complex of a transition metal of Groups VA, VIA, VIIA and VIII of the periodic table onto a graphite- containing carbon support. The catalyst is preferably ruthenium promoted by potassium or rubidium. Such a catalyst is suitable for use in a process for the production of ammonia.
