Alpha-ethylenically unsaturated monomers are polymerized in aqueous suspension by including in the aqueous medium a suspension stabilizer which is a water-insoluble calcium phosphate together with a phosphorous ester and thereafter performing the polymerization. The monomer may be styrene,α-methyl styrene, methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile or vinyl or vinylidene chloride, or a mixture of styrene and acrylonitrile. The calcium phosphate may be calcium monohydrogen phosphate or hydroxy apatite or tricalcium phosphate and may be formed in situ e.g. from an aq. solution of a sodium phosphate and calcium chloride. The phosphorous ester may be myristyl, stearyl, lauryl, laurylphenyl or myristylphenyl esters of phosphorous acid or tristearyl, distearyl or trilaurylphenylphosphite. A part of the total amount of the stabilizer may be added prior to initiation of polymerization and the remainder is added stepwise during the polymerization. An initiator, e.g. lauryl or benzoyl peroxide, t-butyl perisobutylate or azobisisobutyronitrile, may be used for the polymerization together with a surfactant, e.g. sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate.
