In a printing machine having a removable ribbon cartridge (24), means are provided for conveniently loading and unloading said ribbon cartridge on a support plate (26). Said means include guide means (55) within the cartridge which cooperate with complementary guide means (40, 42) within the support plate for guiding the cartridge while it is being dropped-in onto the support plate; and lever (43) operated cam/cam-follower means (44, 45, 59) for then shifting the cartridge on the support plate to its final locked position. The cartridge unloading is performed through a reverse lever operation followed by a cartridge pick-up.
