The handrail, or block is attached to the wall by fittings and derives an electrical supply from a cable extending along its length. Included in the rail are indicators showing the way out, and lights providing some illumination in an emergency. A flashing light confirms the need to evacuate the building, along with a siren. A loudspeaker is also included. The rail may be used to guide people out of public buildings, factories, offices, hotels and tower blocks. The indicators may for e.g be controlled to guide people out along a route where smoke is least dense.
