PURPOSE:To prepare a tert-olefin, economically in an industrial scale, by adding water and/or a tert-alcohol to the reaction system for the production of a tert- olefin from an alkyl tert-alkyl ether in the presence of an Al-containing silica catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A tert-olefin is prepared by reacting an alkyl tert-alkyl ether in the presence of an Al-containing silica catalyst, pref. at 150-300 deg.C under a pressure between the atmospheric pressure and 10kg/cm<2>G, and at a superficial feeding rate of 3-20LHSV. In the above process, water and/or a tert-alcohol is added to the reaction system pref. in an amount of 2-10wt% based on the charged amount of the alkyl tert-alkyl ether. The addition of water, etc. is effective to improve the activity of the catalyst, decrease the amount of dialkyl ether produced as a by-product, produce the objective compound at a lower reaction temperature or with a smaller reactor than the conventional process, and improve the recovery of the primary alcohol. |
