The invention relates to a process for the recovery and recycling of elemental silicon from an organohalosilane reactor system during direct synthesis and comprises the steps of analysing a portion of the contact material being discharged, such as pulverulent silicon material from a secondary cyclone, by means of a particle size distribution analyser, determining those finely powdered fractions which contain the relatively largest amounts of impurities, and separating off a relatively impure pulverulent fraction from a purer coarse fraction by means of an aerodynamic centrifugal classifying device.
