In a process for controlling a sintering step, this is automatically adjusted on the basis of an operational control system which is contained in a computer and has four target values for the control parameters, namely for the production sequence, the strength of the sintered ore, the temperature of the exit gas and the pressure of the exit gas. The operational control system comprises the following steps: I) relative evaluation of the values, measured under the current conditions, relative to the target values of the control parameters; II) adjusting the gas flow, based on the criterion according to step I), and evaluation of the permeability level in the sintered layer; III) adjustment of the permeability level to safeguard the installations, i.e. without risk of damage to the plant, based on the criterion according to step II); and IV) control of the sintering step, based on the criteria according to steps I) and II).
