PURPOSE:To provide an agent for preventing or inhibiting the progress of dental caries and containing the extract of KOBOKU (bark of Magnolia officinalis REHD. et WILS.), OREN (rhizome of Coptis chinensis FRANCH.) etc. or magnolol and honokiol which are the active components of the above extract. CONSTITUTION:The objective agent contains the extract of KOBOKU, OREN, GOBAISHI (gall of Rhus chinensis MILL), GENNOSHOKO (whole grass of Geranium thunbergii SIEB. et ZUCC.), OBAKU (bark of Phellodendron amurense RUPR.), etc. and/or their active components (e.g. magnolol or formula I, honokiol of formula II, berberine, etc.). The agent inhibits remarkably the growth of Streptomyces mutans which is a cariogenic bacterium having the strongest cariogenicity. The agent has somewhat milder activity than erythromycin, and lower side effects than antibiotic substances, and is suitable for administration for a long period. It also exhibits remarkable effect at a low concentration in a short time. Administered directly in the oral cavity, or by mixing with tooth paste, or in the form of troche or sublingual tablet. |
