The motor contains a squirrel-cage rotor and a stator having a single-phase main winding and having an auxiliary starting winding. A capacitor is connected in series with the auxiliary starting winding, by means of which capacitor a phase shift of the current flowing through the auxiliary starting winding with respect to the current flowing through the main winding can be produced during operation. The sheet-metal laminates of the stator are shaped in the same way as for a stator having salient poles. This results in a single-phase induction motor with an auxiliary phase and a starting capacitor, in which the stator essentially has the shape of a stator with salient poles. The stator can operate with or without copper short-circuiting rings, which surround a part of each pole shoe in a shaded pole motor. However, if the stator is fitted with short-circuiting rings there is a considerable increase in the output motor torque, as a function of the rotation speed. <IMAGE>
