The roller (1) for travel on the surfaces of sports grounds being treated, has a series of radially protruding pointed spikes (3) on its peripheral surface. It can be made up from bars (2), set close together and parallel to its longitudinal axis, each armed with one or more rows of spikes. Spikes on adjacent bars may be mutually offset in their lengthways direction. Bars may be detachably fastened to end discs (4). The roller can be mounted in a housing box (5), pref. with a pole attached (7). Raking and other surface loosening can be carried out quickly and easily.
