The capability of a cantilever beam to store energy imparted thereto by a deflectionary force is supplemented by a layer of elastomeric material. In a particular embodiment an electrical socket (10) having a cantilever beam contact (20) is filled with an elastomer (28). A male contact (42), when inserted into the socket through the elastomer (28), deflects the beam contact (20) against the action of the elastomer (28) supporting it.
