Catheter system with a tubular catheter which is packed in a sterile elongate sheath together with a mandrel inserted in the catheter and projecting from the insertion end of the catheter, and with a flexible plastic cannula containing a steel cannula projecting from the insertion side. The flexible cannula has a longitudinal weak point and a diameter corresponding to the diameter of the catheter. The small diameter reduces the risk of tissue traumatisation, formation of haematomas and bleeding into the tissues. The catheter can be inserted without any great outlay and in a manner safe from contamination. <IMAGE>
