PURPOSE:To set a character to the most legible size, by deriving a ratio of a character area of an original document picture and a blank area, comparing with a character and blank ratio of a reference character, and deciding a reduction ratio, when executing the reduction processing of a copying machine, etc. CONSTITUTION:An input picture data (a) is stored once in a multi-value picture storing circuit S. A storage picture (b) is inputted to a character area position detecting circuit T, and is binary-coded 1. Subsequently, an internal white picture element surrounded by the external form of a character is converted to a black picture element at every character, and a connected picture data (d') is outputted. Subsequently, a position data (e) of a rectangular area which is contained and is made to contact with is detected. In accordance with the storage data (e), a character and blank area ratio operating circuit U operates a ratio of a charater area of the data (a) and its blank area. A character to blank ratio data (g) is compared with a reference character to blank ratio data set in advance, in a character area reduction ratio deciding circuit V, and a designated reduction ratio data l is decided. Subsequently, a reduction processing operating circuit X reduces a character area of the data (b) in accordance with the data l, (e). |
