The short coupling for rail vehicles has a coupling head (11) with a mechanically or manually operated lock (12). The head is connected to the fixing bracket (19) by a universal joint held in slots in the bracket (19). On each side of the head between the head and the fixing bracket are tension and compression units (17). When in use the connecting joint is drawn to the front of the slot so that during braking the compression unit absorbs the shock. When the joint is turned the units tend to centralise the head by one unit being in compression and the other in tension, thus keeping a positive connection between vehicles at all times.
