1. Method of making a dense ceramic material substantially without a glass phase, the material containing high purity mullite and if desired an alpha-Al2 O3 , characterized in that a mixture of 1. at least 3% by weight of mullite particles 2. alpha-Aluminium oxide particles in a quantity at least equalling that required for the stoichiometric composition of mullite and 3. aluminosilicate glass particles in a quantity sufficient for the reaction of silicon dioxide with aluminium oxide to form a desired mullite content, is sintered between 1300 and 1800 degrees C. |
