PURPOSE:To enable to prepare water holding base with excellent oleophilicity and water holding ability, by reacting a secific long-chain glycol or a long-chain oxide having a straight-chain hydrocarbon group with isostearic acid by using a specific catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Equimolar isostearic acid is added to a 14-18C straight-chain alkylene 1,2-glycol or a 14-18C straight-chain alkylene 1,2-oxide and, by using an alkali metal salt such as a K, Na or Li salt of an 8C or higher medium or higher fatty acid such as octanoic acid, decanoic acid or myristic acid, reacted under heating at 150-190 deg.C for about 4hr to prepare a water holding base comprising a hydroxyalkyl isostearate shown by formulas I or II. The resulting water holding base has oleophilicity and water holding ability similr to that of lanolin and has excellent characteristics free from a fear of skin sensitization. In formulae I and II, R1 is a 12-16C straight-chain alkyl group and R2 is an isostearic acid residue. |
