PURPOSE:To obtain an inexpensive ultrasonic light modulator having a simple structure and suitable for mass production by recrystallizing the surface of a PGO or PGSO glass plate and sticking an interlaced electrode for exciting bulk waves on the recrystallized layer. CONSTITUTION:The surface of a glass plate 41 made of Pb5Ge3O11(PGO) or Pb5Ge3-xSixO11(PGSO) is recrystallized by laser annealing or other method, and an interlaced electrode 43 for exciting bulk waves is stuck on the recrystallized layer 42. When the electrode 43 is electrically driven 47, ultrasonic waves are propagated through the plate 41, and phase grating is formed. Accordingly, incident light 44 undergoes Raman-Nath diffraction or Bragg reflection, and zero-order light 45 and highly-modulated primarily-diffracted light 46 emerge. Thus, an inexpensive ultrasonic light modulator having a simple structure suitable for mass production is obtd. |
