The invention relates to a walking beam, specifically in particular to its drive devices, by means of which a material, for example a steel product such as a steel tube or round bar, placed on a number of fixed beams for transfer is raised from below, moved forwards and lowered again onto the fixed beams by a number of transfer beams, said operation being repeated to carry out the material transfer. Each of the drive devices comprises a first connecting member for bringing about the circular movement of the transfer beam, said first connecting member being rotatable with a radius of rotation about a support shaft. The support shaft is arranged at the front end of a second connecting member and is rotatable with a radius of rotation about a main rotational shaft. Furthermore, a first gearwheel is arranged on the support shaft, which gearwheel is rotatable together with the first connecting member, and the first gearwheel meshes with a second gearwheel arranged on the main rotational shaft. The drive of the second gearwheel and of the second connecting member is controlled selectively in such a way that one of the parts is driven and the other is locked or both are driven. In this way, the feed length of the transfer stroke of the transfer beam is altered.
