PURPOSE:To make it unnecessary to adjust a position between an optical fiber and an optical waveguide, by arraying the optical fiber in a V-groove on a substrate, and also forming such a high refractive index layer of glass as nearly fills a hollowed part caused by its V-groove. CONSTITUTION:V-grooves 2-5, 2'-5' which have been joined in one groove around the center part are formed on a substrate 1, and a low refractive index glass layer 7 having thickness of such an extent as holds projecting and hollowed shapes of the V-grooves is formed on the part except both end parts of said substrate. Also, on said layer, a glass layer 8 whose refractive index is higher than that of the glass layer 7 is formed so as to nearly fill a hollowed part of the V-groove, and furthermore, on said layer 8, a low refractive index glass layer 9 is formed. As a result, the parts of 10-14 become an optical waveguide, and each optical fiber and each optical waveguide are coupled efficiently by only placing optical fibers 16-19, 16'-19' in the V-groove parts 2-5, 2'-5'. |
