In a glass fiber drawing appts. comprising an orifice plate (20) with a planar undersurface and a winder (26), the nozzle (28) for supplying gas to the underside of the plate is mounted on a carriage (34) slidably supported on guide tracks located between the plate and the winder. The carriage is selectively moved laterally towards or away from the fiber stream to a first position adjacent the stream to direct gas against the plate and a second position remote from the stream. Used in conjunction with an electronic break-out detector, where the gas supply from the nozzle is cut off and the carriage is moved away from the stream, in the event of a break-out.
