A machine tool comprises a bed carrying a movable saddle and work-table, a column carrying a movable head stock supporting a horizontally movable and rotatable tool spindle, and a power transmission for providing variable rates of movement of the movable members comprising a power unit in the headstock for rotating the spindle, a second drive unit in the bed for moving the elements, and a coupling for selectively interconnecting the units. A horizontal boring mill comprises a bed 22, Figs. 1 and 2, secured to a foundation 23, a saddle 28 slidable on ways 26 and 40 on the bed, a worktable 30 slidable on ways 31 on the saddle, and headstock 37 vertically movable on ways 39 formed on a column 35. Feed screws SS, TS and HS, Fig. 10, are provided for moving the saddle, table, and headstock respectively, and a screw ES is provided for moving the end support. The feed screws are driven either from a motor M in the machine bed or from a motor HM in the headstock, the latter motor also driving tool spindle 46 through a planetary gear arrangement 192. The drive from motor M is through a gear train 107-116, a clutch 120, a planetary transmission unit 95, gear train 128-130, gear 133, and clutches 141-143, the drive being reversible for any, or all of the feed screws, through a pinion 151. The drive from motor HM is through a gear train 210, 217, a train 221-226, and clutch 120. A lead screw 270 for feeding the tool spindle is driven from shaft 132 through couplings 233, 235, shaft 240, a gear train 257, and clutch 263, or in the reverse direction through a gear train 248 and clutch 263. Column 35, Figs. 8, 9, is mounted directly on foundation 23, and is rigidly fastened to wall 22<SP>1</SP> of bed 22. Transmission unit 45, Fig. 3, including motor M, is supported on pads 60, Fig. 5, in a cavity 55 in bed 22 so as to leave channels for circulating cooling air, Figs. 4 and 8, thus insulating the machine from the transmission units. The casing 52 of unit 45, Figs. 3 and 4, has a depending portion 65 for alignment purposes, and encloses a lubricating oil reservoir 75, for pump 112, Fig. 10. Motor M has a fan 85, Fig. 4, which communicates with the air passages between casing 52 and the walls of cavity 55. Unit 95 comprises a number of interchangeable sections I-III, Fig. 10, selected to give the required speed changes, and is mounted by its manifold plate 124, Fig. 3. Fluid controls including solenoid valves S are mounted on the plate, and are connected to a fluid pressure source for accomplishing ratio changes and shifting of transmission unit brakes.
