PURPOSE:To obtain a photographic emulsion with high sensitivity and superior shelf stability by adding a specified catechol compound together with silver halide particles sensitized by reduction during growth. CONSTITUTION:An emulsion is prepared by adding a compound represented by the formula (where each of R1 and R2 is H, optionally substituted alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, acyl or ccloalkyl, and each of R3-R6 is H, halogen, OH, optionally substituted alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkoxy, acyl, alkylthio, aryloxy, arylthio, acylamino, alkylamino, alkoxycarbonyl or sulfonamido) together with silver halide particles sensitized by reduction during growth. The particles includes silver halide particles grown after reduction sensitization. This emulsion has high sensitivity and superior shelf stability ahd gives a high contrast image.
