PURPOSE:To improve the mechanical strength and active material retainability of a plate by retaining an active material in a porous sheet obtained through a way in which a group of fiber of lead or lead alloy is collected and intersections of fibers are partially sintered. CONSTITUTION:A group of fiber of lead or lead alloy is collected and pressed to form a sheet, and it is heated at 300 to 350 deg.C to partially sinter intersections of fibers and to form a grid with porosity of 85 to 90%. Then it is soaked in a slurry active material paste of low viscosity which contains lead powder mainly and dried at a temperature of 60 to 85 deg.C, and this process is repeated several times to retain a prescribed amount of active material in the grid. Thus the mechanical strength of the grid is improved to eliminate the deformation of the plate due to the volume change of the active material, the electrical resistance of the grid itself is reduced, the retainability of the active material is improved, and the battery performance can be improved. |
