Out-of-round detector for pipeline - uses tractor with skirts driven by fluid flow to drive measuring wheel with sensors providing signals for recorder

The device has a tractor (A) in a pipe (1) fitted with skirts (5) of a polyurethane material and contains the power supply accumulators (6). The tractor is driven by the fluid in the pipe and is coupled to an inspection carriage (B) to which a measuring wheel (C) is attached. The carriage rotates to press inclined wheels (7,8) strongly against the wall of the pipe. The information is stored using a tape recorder (9) with a large number of tracks. A fixed pinion (10) connected through a toothed belt (13) to a rotating shaft (12) rotates a shaft (4) to drive the measuring wheel. This wheel comprises a hollow disc (14) with two small wheels (15) which maintain contact with the pipe. Differential transformer sensors provide linear displacement data for the recordings.
