The system uses a multiplexed optical fibre transmission network with decoders associated with each electrical device, such as headlamps, door locking etc., to detect an instruction in the data stream which is appropriate to a partic. device and to then operate a switch to connect the device to the electric supply network. The driver's control panel has pushbuttons which when pressed cause a light emitting diode to emit a coded signal. The signal is detected and activates a pulse train generator which delivers a coded pulse train onto the fibre optic network trunk. The decoder associated with each device monitor the data stream on the trunk and if its own code is detected activates the device.
