PURPOSE:To prevent the breakage of a seal member at the time of its insertion into a monolithic catalyst converter for the engine exhaust gas purification by press fitting a heat expanding type sealing material with a low friction film bonded to it into an annular space between a cylindrical case of said converter and a monolithic catalyst. CONSTITUTION:An unexpanded heat expanding type seal member 8 is bonded to the outside circumference on one end of a monolithic catalyst 1, the outside diameter of said seal member 8 being set larger than the inside diameter of a casing 2 to which the catalyst 1 is to be inserted, and a low friction thin film 10 such as a polyester film and the like being bonded to the outside circumference of said seal member 8. When inserting the catalyst 1 into the casing 2 a shock damper type seal member 7 is set on the innermost end 6 of the casing 2 and a compressive type with mesh 12 is wound around the outer circumference of the catalyst 1 which is pressed into the casing 2 after fixing at press fitting jig 14 having a tapered inside face 13 with the seal member 8 being inserted into the casing 2 by the thin film 10. The seal member 8 is then expanded by the exhaust gas heat. |
