The fuel gas is sampled, the sample mixed with an excess of oxygen and completely burnt, and either the oxygen consumed or the excess oxygen remaining after combustion is measured. As shown, the sample is mixed with air at 20 and fed to heated chamber where the oxidation is catalysed by catalytic measuring electrode 34 of solid electrolyte sensor 32, the sensor output being a measure of oxygen consumed. In an alternative embodiment the oxygen for combustion is supplied by a solid electrolyte oxygen pump.
