Traction, compression or torsion springs are formed of a composite of fibres and a matrix which is pre-stressed by the arrangement of the high modulus fibres within the matrix. The arrangement may be simple, in cases where the spring is stressed in the same direction as it lies in its rest position, or staggered, where the spring is stressed in different directions to that of the rest position, as in a car stabiliser. Each spring may be made up of a series of annular matrices which may be compared of coaxial or helicoidal fibres or a mixture of these.
|
