A mixt. of <=1μ size high-pressure phase BN and C is degassed and hot pressed without exposing to air. The sintered piece consists of BN and tract B4C, and is useful for cutting tools. Thus, com. cubic BN <=1μ was mixed with 2 % C black compacted, and placed between hexagonal BN pieces. A sintered Cu-35% Mn piece was placed on the BN piece. The composite was hot pressed at 55 kbars and 1500≦̸C to prep. a cutting tool. The flank loss was 0.2 mm for cutting SKH 55 steel at 100 m/min and depth 1 mm.
