An app. for treating a water soln. of a waste material contg. a salt with smelt-water explosion characteristics comprises an open-bottomed incinerator provided with at least one sprayer with which the soln. is sprayed into a combustion chamber and a downward directed fuel burner, and a gas-liq. separator provided with an inlet vertically aligned with the combustion chamber. A inclined baffle member in the form of a flat plate disposed in the gas-liq. separator, which provides with the gas and liq. outlets being remote from said inlet in horizontal direction.
