PURPOSE:A compound oxide, a combination of an oxide of titanium or zirconium with an oxide of a specific metal such as copper or nickel, is used as catalyst to effect the reaction between unsaturated nitrile and water to produce the titled compound economically with technical easiness. CONSTITUTION:A compound oxide, containing at least one selected from the group consisting of titanium, zirconium, at least one selected from the groups consisting of zinc, cadmium and copper and at least one selected from the group consisting of nickel, cobalt, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, silver and lanthanum, is used as a catalyst to effect the reaction of an unsaturated nitrile with water at 40-150 deg.C to produce the titled compound. The catalyst is prepared, e.g., by adding aqueous alkali hydroxide to a solution of two or more salts of the above metals and calcinating the precipitate of the metal hydroxide. |
