PURPOSE:To prepare a nitroaniline compound by hydrogenating an aromatic dinitro compound under low hydrogen pressure using copper chromite, palladium, ruthenium or nickel as the hydrogenation catalyst, thereby selectively hydrogenating one of the two nitro groups of the aromatic dinitro compound. CONSTITUTION:In the preparation of a nitroaniline compound by the partial reduction of an aromatic dinitro compound having two nitro groups on the aromatic nucleus, the reduction is carried out catalytically, using one or more catalysts selected from copper chromite, palladium, ruthenium and nickel, under pressurized hydrogen atmosphere. The hydrogen pressure is pref. <=50kg/cm<2> when the catalyst is copper chromite, or <=20kg/cm<2> when the catalyst is palladium, ruthenium and/or nickel.
