The synchronised dog clutch comprises a coupling sleeve (31) splined to the clutch shaft (22) and having dog claws (41) at its ends. A synchroniser ring (45) is slidably fitted to the outer periphery of the coupling sleeve (31) at each end and has a conical face (46) for frictional engagement with a conical face (48) of the respective gear wheel (20,21). The latter face is disposed closely and radially inside the teeth (24), and the claws (42) of each gear wheel (20) are arranged inside the conical face (48). Torque transmitted through the conical faces (46,48) for synchronisation is increased. The rings (45) may be coupled to the sleeve (31) via splines or via baulking pin and slot arrangements (50,51). During clutch release, if a ring (45) accompanies initial movement of the sleeve (31) it will abut a stop (62) and be displaced to its idle position defined by a detent (49). Vent passages (66) are provided.
