In a clamping device (1), the clamping member (2) can be moved by means of a drive piston (13) which can be uncoupled from this clamping member (2), and in fact it can be moved directly via a setting stroke and via a working stroke by a mechanical transmission mechanism with high force. The transmission mechanism has bell-crank levers (5) which are mounted on the clamping member (2) and carry inner rollers (7), interacting with tapered outer surfaces provided on an axial extension of the drive piston (13), and outer rollers (8) interacting with the inner wall (9) of the cylinder (10) accommodating the drive piston (13) and with part of the inner surface of an adjoining ring (11). A rod (4) passing through the drive piston (13) in a sliding manner is connected to the clamping member (2). At its other end, the rod (4) carries a disc (20) supported via a Belleville-washer assembly (21). The drive piston (13) strikes against the disc (20) during the return stroke. To avoid the hard striking of the moving parts at the end of the return stroke and the risk of damage to the inner rollers (7) and the pivots (6) of the transmission mechanism and the drive piston (13), the lid (25) closing off the working space of the cylinder (10) is designed as a damping element. <IMAGE>
