The hydraulic ram comprises a cylinder housing and fixed and moving members. Inside the housing (1), a detector (4,5,6) for a length-measurement device is mounted between the fixed (2) and the moving (3) members. The detector can consist of a coil spring coupled to a force-measurement unit. The spring can also have a strain gauge strip fixed to its surface. The design allows accurate measurement of the ram stroke, being particularly for use in mining machinery.
