Centrifugal pump for a washing or dishwashing machine has a casing in two parts having an inlet port in the centre of the lid which incorporates a labyrinth seal between the inlet and the surrounding annular or spiral pressure canal. The inlet port enlarges towards the impeller, and has a protruding lip which diverts the water seeping through the gap between the impeller and the lid towards the pressure canal. This prevents the seepage flowing into the inlet port against the ingoing flow, thus increasing the effective capacity of the pump, and reducing the noise output.
