Prodn. and conditioning of pastes, dispersions and gels of fibrous animal protein materials (esp. collagen), in which the raw material (I) is subjected to a mechanical comminution in the wet state and simultaneous treatment with a chlorinated org. acid at nor more than 30-32 deg.C, the prod. diluted with water to an acid content of 0.01-0.1 molar and a pH of 2.5-4.5, and the resulting dispersion or gel purified by filtration, centrifuging, etc. Preferred raw materials (I) are hides which may be fresh, dried, salted, pickled, chalk-treated, etc. Pref. the material (which is suitably waste pieces and off-cuts) is comminuted at 5-30% solids content (eg. in a defibrillating mill) in the pres. of chloro-acetic acid, chloropropionic acid, di- or trichloro-acetic acid, etc. |
