摘要 Iron-on stiffening material is produced by continuously depositing filaments of thermoplastic material as a web on a continuously moving woven or non-woven textile material and causing the filaments to fuse to one another. The filaments may be continuously extruded in say molten or dissolved form as continuous filaments immediately prior to their formation into the web, stretched and then deposited as a web, on to the textile material. The filaments can be deposited unset, their surfaces at least still being tacky to cause them to fuse to one another, or after setting when the web is heated to fuse the filaments. The filaments may be set by cooling or evaporation, or by completing the polymerisation in the case of a prepolymer. Mixtures of thermoplastic filaments may be used. The web on the textile material may be so heated that the filamentary structure of the filaments is destroyed and the thermoplastic material contracts into discrete particles giving a discontinuous and air permeable coating. Such heating may be by say hot air or infra-red radiation, and the two heating stages may be combined so that the filaments fuse to one another and almost immediately lose their filamentary structure. When a particulate coating has been formed the material may be passed through a cold calender to flatten the particles. In one embodiment, filaments of a copolyamide of caprolactam, hexamethylene diamine adipate and benzenesulphonic acid butyl amide are extruded from the melt, stretched and set by air streams, deposited on a textile material and heated to form particles. The nature of the particulate coating can be varied by changing the diameter of the filaments and the deposition and heating conditions. In a modified method, the web of filaments of the thermoplastic material is formed on a carrier, the filaments are caused to fuse to one another or to contract to particles as above, and the thermoplastic material is subsequently transferred to the textile material by hot pressing. The carrier may be of paper having a silicone coating.
