Difficultly water-soluble dyes of formula (wherein X 1 and X 2 are both H or X 1 is an amino group and X 2 is OH, Y is H, halo, or an alkyl, alkoxy, alkylthio or alkylsulphonyl group having up to 4 carbon atoms in the main chain and R 1 is a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl (C 1-12 ), alkenyl, aralkyl or cycloalkyl group), and mixtures comprising two such compounds with different values for R 1 , are prepared by oxidizing a corresponding 2-unsubstituted anthraquinone to the corresponding quinone imine, reacting the latter with a compound of formula R 1 -S-R 2 (wherein R 2 is as defined for R 1 , being identical with or different from R 1 ) and recovering the desired product from the reaction mixture, preferably by treating the addition product formed with a nucleophilic reagent. Dyes of the above formula and mixtures thereof impart blue shades to fibres of cellulose esters, linear polymeric esters of aromatic dicarboxylic acids and polyfunctional alcohols, and polyolefins.
