Elastomers are produced by reacting a polymer of a saturated C2-C12 alkylene oxide containing an oxirane ring with a free radical vulcanizing agent and a sulphur containing vulcanizing agent. Suitable free radical agents organic diperoxides, hydroperoxides or hydrogen peroxide or azodiisobutyronitrile and dicumyl peroxide is preferred. Sulphur is the preferred S-containing agent of which a long list is given. The free radical agent and the sulphur are each present in a proportion of from 0.1-20 parts per 100 parts of polyalkylene oxide and the curing time may be varied from about 1 minute to 20 hours. There may also be present in the reaction mixture fillers, reinforcing materials, extenders and stabilizers for the polyalkylene oxide such as zinc oxide, stearic acid, carbon black, phenyl beta-naphthylamine, and hydroquinone monobenzyl ether. The polyalkylene oxides used preferably have molecular weights of from 100,000 to 20,000,000 and may, for example, be prepared from saturated C2- 12 alkylene oxides alone or in admixture using a zinc di-n-butyl/aluminium triisopropoxide/water catalyst. The preparation of various polymers of propylene oxide is described and the curing of various polypropylene oxides is exemplified. |
