The invention relates to the production of foam composites which are thermally insulating and light and therefore suitable for use as e.g. ceiling tiles, wall tiles and brick insulation. The aim of the invention is to produce a light, strong composite as cheaply as possible. The method comprises reacting, in the presence of water and poly(vinyl alcohol), hollow silica spheres with a water-soluble organic polyacid and then allowing or causing the resulting composite to set.
