A cyclic ketoxime is rearranged in the gaseous phase into the corresponding lactam at 200-400‹ C., in the presence of a catalyst obtained by heating a mixture of boric acid and supporting material together with a nitrogencontaining compound which forms boron nitride with boric acid or boron trioxide, at a temperature of from 250-900‹ C. Oximes containing 5-12 C e.g. cyclopenta-, hexa-, hepta-, octa-, deca-, -ane oximes and methyl cyclohexanone oximes are referred to. An example describes the production of caprolactam from cyclohexanone oxime. |
