<p>To correct flexure of the knife of an automatic machine used for cutting fabrics and other flat materials, flexing of the knife 1' is detected by a digital sensor 28 providing a signal indicating only the presence of flexure and its direction. The digital information is applied to a computer or processor 2' which provides a flexure-correcting signal controlling the orientation of the knife with respect to its path. Sensors 5', 6' feed back knife position and speed. The required correction is computed in conjunction with these signals and information concerning the properties of the material to be cut. The computer 2 may also be programmed to produce preventive corrections based on characteristics of the material to be cut, etc. and also to initiate automatic sharpening of the knife. <IMAGE></p> |
