PURPOSE:To prevent a common alternate area from being accessed and to speed up decision by recording a bit of information in the vicinity of a user block in the case of assigning a alternate block to the replacing area. CONSTITUTION:When a data writing command is received from a CPU 1, the received data are recorded in a specified block. Then, a disk controller 2 checks data reading, and when the data are not normally written, regards the user block as a defective one and executes alternate block processing. A alternate area 11 in a user area 31 is searched, and when no alternate block is decided, an instruction for assigning an alternate block to the common alternate area is recorded in a common alternate area control area and the alternate block is assigned.
