PURPOSE:To display patterns which are required to be displayed at all times without the need for voltage application by providing a region of horizontal orientation treatment differing in an orientation direction in the horizontally oriented surface of one substrate out of a pair of substrates of a liquid crystal display device. CONSTITUTION:Orientation treatment for orienting liquid crystal molecules in an arrow direction is applied on an upper orientation film 6 formed on the surface of the upper substrate 1 of a liquid crystal display device, and orientation treatment for orienting liquid crystal molecules in the direction orthogonal with the orientation direction of the film 6 is applied on the lower orientation film 7 formed on the surface of a lower substrate 2. At this time, a differently oriented region 7b of a prescribed shape is left in the prescribed position of the film 7, and orientation treatment for orienting liquid crystal molecules in the direction parallel (but in an exactly opposite direction) with the orientation direction of the film 6 is applied in this region. Then, light is advanced straight forward in the region 8 corresponding to the region 7B, and the pattern corresponding to the shape of the region 7b is always displayed with voltage application. |
