PURPOSE:To prevent the increase of engine noise, by injecting alcohol in two phases into a combustion chamber, igniting and burning the smaller amount of the first phase injection alcohol in a spark ignition, and igniting and burning the larger amount of the second phase injection alcohol with the combustion heat of the first phase. CONSTITUTION:The alcohol is injected from an injector 22 to finish the alcohol injection in the first phase with the injection quantity smaller than that in the second injection, at an adequate time before a piston 18 reaches the top dead center, and ignited by an ignition plug 12 shortly before the finish of the injection to ignite and burn the alcohol. Then, immediately after the piston 18 passes the top dead center, the second phase alcohol is injected, and ignited and burned by the combustion heat of the first phase. In such a way, since the injection alcohol is burned with no trouble as a whole, and the combustion is made in two phases, the rise of the pressure in the combustion chamber 20 is mitigated, and the generation of NOX, engine noise, and knocking can be suppressed.
