The tape measure with a rule retracted by a return spring and with a hook on its outer end has an insert for the rule consisting of a shaft with a sidewall and a tape spool with a flange. The return spring lies between the shaft and the spool peripheral wall and is attached to the rule through the spool wall. It is designed for simplified manufacture assembly and replacement of the insert, and esp. for automatic production. Different types of insert can be accommodated without requiring the housing to be adapted. The holder is mounted on the insert (50) central shaft (53) and sidewall (54). It is formed in one piece as a peripheral wall (57) enclosing the spool peripheral wall (56). It has an opening for the rule and a lock for the free end.
