In a printer having a type disc 11, Fig. 5, formed with selectable relief characters 11a, impression is effected by a pressure roll assembly 20 comprising a shaft 22 loosely bearing a plurality of adjacent resiliently yielding rings 21 urged toward the disc 11 by a roller 26, the arrangement being such that pressure is applied to the image receiving strip 14 only by the rings 21 opposite the raised portions of the character 11a. The force of impression can be varied by turning eccentric rods 31, which support the roller 26, by means of a lever 18. The rings 21 are preferably made of steel. A print operation is initiated by depression of a key 16, Fig. 2, which releases a latch 54 from engagement with a spring clutch 56 to connect a continuously running motor shaft 57 with a worm gear 61 to rotate a cam-shaft 63. A cam 67 on the shaft 63 lifts the roll assembly 20 into a printing position, whereupon a cam 65 reciprocates the assembly 20 through a follower 74, a linkage 75, an arm 76 and brackets 34 connected to the assembly 20 by pin-and-slot connections. After a single revolution of the shaft 63, the clutch disconnects the drive to the worm gear 61 by means of the latch 54, repositioned by a cam 69. Printing is effected through an ink ribbon 15. Paper feed preferably automatically accompanies a print operation and may be to an extent proportional to the size of character printed. In a modification (Fig. 7, not shown), the roller 26 is replaced by a plurality of discs (86) loosely mounted on a shaft (88) and urged toward the rings (81) by leaf-springs (85).</p> |
