The system utilises the waste heat from a stove or oven, having a large-area heat-exchanger body inserted in the flue from the stove etc. to the chimney. This body (14) is encased in a closed housing (28,30,32) connected by an air inlet and outlet (34,36) to a room other than that in which the stove (10) is situated. The housing can be arranged to occupy completely the space between the stove and the chimney, and its walls can be formed by those of the chimney and the stove at the rear. The top cover plate (30) of the housing can be flush with the top of the stove.
